Unicorn Counts Are a Poor Proxy for Real AI Value Creation

Ninety-eight new unicorns emerged in 2026, a quarter of them AI companies, and total unicorn value rose 43% to roughly $8 trillion. Covered as a single statistic, that sounds like unambiguous evidence of AI's business value. Covered more carefully, it's evidence that private markets are pricing AI companies generously, which is a different and much less certain claim.

A unicorn valuation is a forward-looking bet by a small number of investors, not a measurement of revenue, profit, or even product usage. The real test of AI's business value isn't how many companies cross an arbitrary $1 billion paper valuation this year, it's how many of those 98 companies are still independently operating, and at what multiple of today's valuation, five years from now.
