Editorial: Companies Cutting Jobs Should Say What They Will Build

Kroger and Netflix show restructurings that need clearer accounts of strategy and AI's role.

Editorial: Companies Cutting Jobs Should Say What They Will Build

Kroger will cut about 3,000 corporate roles over three years while giving AI tools to more than 400,000 employees, but its memo does not say how many roles AI will replace. Netflix cut about 1,000 jobs and its memo did not mention AI.

Our position: when a layoff accompanies an AI program, employers should explain which work is changing, what is being rebuilt and how affected staff are supported. Analysts like Neil Saunders say some cuts would have happened anyway; clarity helps staff and investors tell the difference.
