Editorial: Parliament Should Legislate, Not ‘Consider’

UK committee chair Liam Byrne's rebuke of officials is the right standard.

Editorial: Parliament Should Legislate, Not ‘Consider’

UK officials told MPs the government is "looking at" amendments on AI risk to its Cyber Security and Resilience Bill. Committee chair Liam Byrne replied: "You can't consider something in a bill. You have to legislate for something in a bill." AI minister Kanishka Narayan said, "We will legislate wherever necessary."

Our position: ministers should say now whether AI risk, incident reporting and near-miss disclosure belong in the bill, and put text on the table. A parliamentary committee has already called for a dedicated AI bill and a single regulator.
