Meta’s Muse Model License Sets a $20 Million Revenue Line for Model-as-a-Service Businesses

VentureBeat's reading of the Muse Spark Open license shows how Meta balances openness and control.

Meta’s Muse Model License Sets a $20 Million Revenue Line for Model-as-a-Service Businesses

Muse Spark Open ships under Meta's custom Muse Model License, VentureBeat reported on October 15. It grants rights to run, modify, fine-tune, distill and redistribute the model, subject to conditions and a usage policy. Businesses offering the model as a service must notify Meta and sign a separate written agreement if they and affiliates exceed $20 million in aggregate gross revenue in any consecutive 12 months.

The terms exempt internal deployment, research and use within a company's own product that is not a model-as-a-service offering, and require the attribution "Built with Muse Spark Open." Derivatives are defined broadly, including models improved using its outputs, though Meta claims no ownership of generated outputs. The license lets Meta keep the commercial upside for large resellers.
