Alibaba set a goal of more than 20 gigawatts of global data center capacity by 2032, CNBC reported on September 22, and its shares jumped as it unveiled a new AI chip and data center buildout plans. The chip, T-Head's Zhenwu V900, is described as three times faster than the M890 introduced in May.
The strategy is vertical: design chips, build the data centers that run them, and sell the capacity through Alibaba Cloud. It mirrors the approach of U.S. hyperscalers, with the added aim of reducing dependence on constrained imported hardware.
