Our practices for covering AI funding rounds have evolved meaningfully, reflecting lessons from a fast-moving and often overheated fundraising environment.
We stopped treating round size as self-explanatory
Early coverage sometimes let a large round's dollar figure carry the story on its own. We now consistently try to add context - investor track record, disclosed operational metrics - rather than presenting the figure alone.
We got more careful about valuation-only stories
We used to cover valuation milestones fairly readily. We're now more selective, prioritizing rounds that come with some disclosed operational detail over valuation news alone.
We started tracking funding claims against later performance
We didn't consistently revisit whether companies that raised large rounds actually grew into their valuations. We now try to do this kind of retrospective reporting more deliberately.
Why we're naming this evolution
Funding coverage is an area where enthusiasm can substitute for scrutiny fairly easily, and we think being explicit about how we've tightened our own standards is more useful than simply asserting rigor.
