What Changed in How We Approach Opinion & Analysis This Year

Our approach to opinion and analysis content has shifted since we started. Here's what changed and why.

What Changed in How We Approach Opinion & Analysis This Year

Our editorial approach to the Opinion & Analysis section has evolved meaningfully, and we think naming the specific shifts is more useful to readers than simply asserting our standards have always been high.

We tightened our fact-checking bar for opinion content specifically

Early on, we sometimes applied lighter fact-checking scrutiny to opinion pieces than to straight reporting, on the assumption that opinion inherently carries more interpretive latitude. We now apply the same factual rigor to opinion content's underlying claims, reserving latitude only for interpretation, not for facts.

We became more willing to run pieces we disagree with

Early guest opinion selection sometimes skewed toward viewpoints comfortably aligned with our own editorial instincts. We've deliberately pushed to include more genuinely challenging perspectives, provided they meet our standards for rigor.

We started requiring more specific, checkable claims from contributors

We used to accept more generally-stated opinion pieces than we do now. We increasingly push contributors toward specific, falsifiable claims rather than general sentiment, since specific claims age more honestly and inform readers more usefully.

Why we're naming this evolution directly

We think a publication's opinion section reveals a lot about its actual editorial values, and being explicit about how ours has changed is more honest than presenting our current standards as though they'd always been in place.
