UK officials stopped short of committing to AI-specific measures in the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, The Register reported on October 15. Alexandra Jones, a director general in the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, said the government proposes to use the bill to consider changes to "improve preparedness for AI, cyber, and loss of control risks" and to look at reporting of serious incidents and near misses.
Committee chair Liam Byrne replied: "You can't consider something in a bill. You have to legislate for something in a bill." AI minister Kanishka Narayan said, "We will legislate wherever necessary." Whether AI measures go into the bill remains undecided.
