On October 7 and 8, AI stocks fell after the Financial Times reported OpenAI's annualized revenue was approaching $50 billion, not roughly $70 billion. On October 12 to 15, memory chip stocks fell as China's CXMT raised oversupply fears. On October 14, CoreWeave's bond yields neared 15% and Dell fell 11% on a Barclays downgrade. CNBC counted more than $1 trillion lost across 20 AI and chip stocks in a week.
Our view is that these are connected by one question: who pays for the buildout if revenue arrives more slowly or is counted more conservatively? Anthropic's reported Q3, with $16.8 billion of revenue and adjusted profitability, offers a counterexample, but it too rests on anonymous sourcing. Markets are asking labs and neoclouds to show net, audited numbers.
