In one month, Anthropic's leaked IPO prospectus reportedly devoted about 80 of 261 pages to risk, including a warning about "catastrophic or existential risk to humanity," while the company raised at a $965 billion valuation. A researcher who resigned from Anthropic said both leading labs are "gambling with our lives." OpenAI, meanwhile, is reportedly seeking at least $30 billion at about $1.4 trillion.
Our view is that this is not hypocrisy so much as a structural problem. Each lab says it can handle the transition more responsibly than rivals, so each keeps building. The only escape from that logic is some form of external coordination, which is why the debate has shifted toward audits, reporting rules and, in New York City, proposed legislation.
Readers should weigh claims on both sides skeptically. Warnings can be sincere and also serve commercial positioning, and fundraising talk is not the same as a closed round.
