ServiceNow Introduces AI Passport to Define What Each AI Agent Is Allowed to Do

ServiceNow announced new controls for governing AI agents and updates to its EmployeeWorks portal on October 15, SiliconANGLE's Paul Gillin reported.

How AI Passport works

AI Passport is a credential secured by a cryptographic signature that records an agent's identity, allowed actions, reachable systems and responsible owner. It is issued through the AI Control Tower governance platform, carries permissions across agents, tools and vendors, and is checked during execution. It draws on ServiceNow's configuration management database, governance policies and workflow approvals. Nvidia is a design and launch partner, linking it with its Open Agent Safety Platform, and ServiceNow says it uses open specifications so third-party agents and other governance products can participate. In a demonstration, a third-party customer service agent handled refunds under $25: an $18 refund processed automatically, while a $40 request was blocked at runtime and sent for human review. Organizations can pause an agent, restrict its tool access or deactivate it, and restore it later with a recorded explanation.

Control Tower additions

New capabilities include shadow AI detection, more than 400 vendor connectors for discovery and monitoring, AI Cost Management that tracks spending by user, department and runtime, and Operational Resilience for financial institutions. Nenshad Bardoliwalla, SVP of AI products, said: “Without that baseline, every guardrail is just advisory,” and described the controls as “more like a dimmer switch.”

EmployeeWorks

The portal adds Productivity Assistants, Productivity Routines, ToolSmith, a developer environment that builds integrations from natural-language instructions and was trained on more than 75,000 APIs, and a Conversations API. Bhavin Shah, SVP of the employee experience group, said: “There's no coding required. It's drag and configure and deploy all within these guardrails.”

Availability and pricing

AI Passport, shadow AI detection and AI Cost Management arrive later this quarter. Operational Resilience is available now, and the EmployeeWorks tools are in controlled availability. Pricing is seat-based licenses bundled with AI credits called assists.
