Jacob Coxon, who spent about three years researching how to train AI models, first at OpenAI and then at Anthropic, announced his departure in a long social media post, Fortune reported on September 9. He wrote that AI companies are "racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives," and "neither company is acting responsibly."
He said OpenAI staff "have not deeply internalized the civilizational stakes," while Anthropic staff understand the risks but are "locked in a race to get there first." He urged lab researchers: "If you are a lab researcher, I urge you to consider what the next few years will actually feel like." Anthropic has said it has some of the strongest safeguards in the industry.
