OpenAI Tells Investors Its Annualized Revenue Is Approaching $50 Billion, Not $70 Billion

The Financial Times report sent AI stocks lower on October 7 and 8 and revived questions about how labs count revenue.

OpenAI Tells Investors Its Annualized Revenue Is Approaching $50 Billion, Not $70 Billion

The Financial Times reported, and TechCrunch relayed on October 8, that OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue is approaching $50 billion, about $20 billion below the figure of roughly $70 billion that had been reported about a week earlier. CNBC confirmed OpenAI told investors it hit roughly $50 billion at the end of September, against about $68 billion in earlier reports.

Per the FT, the higher number came from investors trying to compare OpenAI directly with Anthropic. TechCrunch notes the two companies calculate annualized revenue differently: Anthropic counts sales made through its cloud partners, while OpenAI does not. A source told CNBC the older figure included gross revenue from partners while the new one is net. OpenAI also cited 77% run-rate growth in the third quarter and 107% growth in its enterprise business.
