Kroger plans to eliminate about 3,000 corporate roles over three years, roughly 37% of about 8,200 corporate employees, Fortune reported on October 14. CEO Greg Foran wrote that "Technology is reshaping what's possible" and that "we must adapt and take advantage of technology," while saying the restructuring will help fund lower prices and frontline investment.
Kroger is developing AI agents to help frontline teams prioritize daily tasks and is making AI training and tools available to more than 400,000 employees. Retail analyst Neil Saunders said Kroger's corporate structure was bloated, so some cuts would have happened without AI, and that it will take time to see whether expected gains in decisions, sourcing and forecasting materialize.
