Fortune's Alyson Shontell published an hour-long interview with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on September 12, recorded in person in San Francisco after an Anthropic employee's post warning that frontier labs were "gambling with our lives." Altman said "no gamble with humanity is OK" and that he would have no problem standing up to his investors if he needed to pause or stop AI development altogether.
Fortune reports Altman alluded to a pact with industry peers to slow down while safety work catches up, called the upcoming IPO "ill-timed" given safety concerns, and said it would not happen until 2027. Fortune's article paraphrases much of the interview, and the full video is on its site.
