Eight States Sue OpenAI Over ChatGPT’s Effects on Children

Eight states sued OpenAI on October 14, CNBC reported, each in its own state court: Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho and Montana. The suits argue ChatGPT is an unsafe product that has harmed children and misled parents. Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird said in a release that the company is giving dangerous medical advice, encouraging people to hurt others, and coaching people to commit suicide.

OpenAI responded that it has built age-specific protections that many other AI products lack and that it is working with states on policies for the whole industry. Florida filed the first such suit in June, and a coalition of attorneys general opened an investigation earlier this year. We have not seen the complaints themselves.
