AI Layoffs: What the Data Can and Cannot Tell Us

AI Layoffs: What the Data Can and Cannot Tell Us

Challenger, Gray & Christmas data cited by Axios shows AI was the most commonly cited reason for U.S. job cuts in July, the fifth straight month. Block cut about 4,000 jobs and Dorsey predicted others would follow, while Visa's CEO said AI was "helping to accelerate" a restructuring that a source said it did not solely drive.

Against that, Sam Altman has warned about "AI-washing," and Oxford Economics found that many layoffs attributed to AI reflected past overhiring. The honest reading is that AI is both a real cause in some firms and a convenient explanation in others.
