The AI Partnership Announcement We Declined to Cover

Not every partnership announcement clears our bar for a standalone story. Here's how we make that call and why we think it matters.

The AI Partnership Announcement We Declined to Cover

We regularly receive partnership announcements from AI companies that we choose not to cover as standalone stories, a decision that sometimes draws pushback from the companies involved. Explaining how we make that call is, we think, more useful to readers than simply making the decision silently.

What doesn't clear our bar

A partnership announcement with no disclosed financial terms, no specific product or integration described beyond general language about "exploring opportunities together," and no evidence of prior technical work between the parties reads, to us, as primarily a mutual credibility exercise rather than a development readers need to know about.

Why we apply this bar consistently, including to well-known companies

A partnership announcement involving a prominent company generates real inbound interest regardless of its substance, which creates pressure to cover it simply because readers will be searching for information about it. We think that pressure is exactly the wrong reason to lower our standard for what counts as a genuinely newsworthy development.

What we do instead

Where a partnership doesn't clear the bar for standalone coverage but a reader might reasonably search for it, we sometimes note it briefly within a broader roundup rather than granting it a full story, which lets us acknowledge the announcement exists without treating it as more substantive than it is.

Why we think this restraint matters

Covering every partnership announcement at the same weight as substantive ones trains readers, over time, to treat all partnership news as equally significant, which makes it harder for them to recognize the genuinely consequential ones when they do occur.
