SAP Makes Autonomous Enterprise Generally Available and Turns Joule Into a Full-Screen Work Layer

At SAP Connect 2026, the company moved from promising agentic autonomy to a defined way for users to work with agents outside its applications.

SAP Makes Autonomous Enterprise Generally Available and Turns Joule Into a Full-Screen Work Layer

SAP said at SAP Connect 2026 that its Autonomous Enterprise architecture, introduced at Sapphire in May, becomes generally available in October alongside Joule Work and Joule Desktop. SiliconANGLE's Kyt Dotson reported the announcements on October 6.

What is new

Joule, SAP's generative AI assistant that debuted in 2023, has been upgraded into an automation, productivity and development tool and a conversational interface layer that works alongside applications. Joule Work is a framework for putting AI assistants into customer workflows across SAP and non-SAP applications. Joule Desktop is an interface that sits where customers already work and draws on the same enterprise information. SAP also announced new or revised agents for finance, supply chain, spend, workforce and customer experience. The article's example is answering a question about total corporate spend by combining ERP, travel and expense, and procurement records into one answer.

What SAP said

Manoj Swaminathan, president and chief product officer of Autonomous Suite, said the first principle is “AI on apps as opposed to AI in apps,” and that “Joule is no longer a natural language chat client for us; it is a full-screen experience.” He added: “Autonomous enterprise is not a vision anymore. It is real, with general availability in October.” He also said it is going to be a journey for the customer.

Pricing

SAP will use AI units as its primary commercial monetization method, a model that is mainly consumption-based rather than purely subscription-based. Agent inference consumes units, and SAP gives customers visibility into usage. Customers can already view agents in SAP's Discovery Center.

Competitive context

The article says Salesforce and ServiceNow are pursuing similar trends toward headless applications and agentic control planes, and that general-purpose models from OpenAI and Anthropic cannot deliver SAP's structured enterprise data layer when placed on top of enterprise data. That is SiliconANGLE's framing of the market. It names no customers and gives no financial or usage figures.
