AI Was Cited for Only 4.5% of 2025 Job Cuts, Challenger Data Show

Challenger, Gray & Christmas data cited in coverage of recent layoffs shows AI was mentioned as a reason for 55,000, or 4.5%, of the 1.2 million job cuts U.S. companies announced in 2025. By July 2026, Axios reported, AI was the most commonly cited reason for U.S. job cuts for the fifth consecutive month.

The change in the cited share shows how quickly AI has moved into executive messaging about layoffs, even as researchers like Oxford Economics say many cuts reflect past overhiring. We found no updated 2026 full-year tally in the coverage reviewed.
