Researcher Interview: Alex Turner, Who Left DeepMind, Tells NYC Lawmakers Why

Alex Turner, who left Google DeepMind in June, was subpoenaed to testify at the New York City Council hearing, Fortune reported. He described trying to stop Google's Pentagon deal and said, "I felt ashamed of Demis and of working at Google," and argued that "China is not our only potential adversary."

Representatives of Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta attended. Google's Alice Friend said forecasting catastrophic risk "is not a perfect science at this stage," and OpenAI's Morgan Dwyer called any chance of catastrophe "unacceptable." SpaceXAI was subpoenaed but did not attend. Asked whether their companies insure against catastrophic risk, none of the representatives raised a hand.
