The U.S. Defense Department signed agreements with Nvidia, Microsoft and Amazon Web Services to run their AI on classified systems, TechCrunch reported on May 1. The department said the companies' AI hardware and models will be deployed on Impact Level 6 (IL6) and Impact Level 7 (IL7) environments.
Classified-network authorization is a high bar and a durable moat: once a vendor's stack is accredited and embedded, switching costs are large. It also pulls frontier AI deeper into national security procurement, where requirements differ sharply from commercial deployments.
