Mistral AI raised $830 million in institutional debt from a seven-bank consortium to build a sovereign GPU data center in Bruyeres-le-Chatel, outside Paris, TechCrunch reported on March 30. The facility is planned with 13,800 Nvidia GB300 GPUs and 44 megawatts of capacity.
The financing is part of a wider infrastructure push. Mistral has announced 1.2 billion euros for digital infrastructure in Sweden, including AI data centers, and has talked about building 1 gigawatt of compute capacity in Europe by 2030.
Using debt for hardware rather than only equity is notable for a model developer: it treats compute as a financeable asset, a model more familiar from cloud providers than from research labs.
