White House and Congress Relaunch the Push to Block State AI Laws

Axios reported on June 8 that the White House and Congress relaunched an effort to block state AI laws, reporting that the administration is negotiating a federal preemption of some state AI laws in exchange for support of other tech priorities. Sen. Marsha Blackburn is spearheading talks on a package that includes kids' protections and deepfake rules.

Earlier attempts failed: a 10-year moratorium on state AI laws was rejected 99-1 in the Senate, and preemption language was dropped from the annual defense policy bill. Democrats have introduced a bill to repeal the December order, and some Republican governors have also opposed the preemption push.
