Our approach to unicorn coverage has evolved since we started. Here's what changed and why.

What Changed in How We Cover AI Unicorns This Year

Our practices for covering AI unicorns have shifted meaningfully, and naming the specific changes matters.

We stopped treating valuation as the whole story

Early coverage sometimes led with and largely rested on valuation figures. We now try more consistently to pair valuation with whatever operational context is actually available.

We got more honest when that context isn't available

When a company discloses little beyond valuation, we now say so explicitly rather than implying a fuller picture we don't have.

We started following up on unicorns' later trajectories

We didn't consistently report on what happened to companies after they crossed the unicorn threshold. We now try to revisit these companies' later performance more deliberately.

Why this evolution matters

A billion-dollar valuation alone tells readers relatively little about a company's actual health, and we think being more disciplined about that distinction is worth stating directly.
