The most common question about our startup funding coverage is how we choose which rounds to cover, given how many AI startups raise funding in any given week.
Why this selection question matters
The volume of AI startup funding activity means we cover a small fraction of what happens, and readers reasonably want to understand the logic rather than assume coverage is arbitrary.
Our actual criteria
We prioritize rounds with a specific, verifiable signal beyond the dollar figure - a notable lead investor, disclosed operational metrics, or a genuinely novel technical approach - over rounds whose primary news value is size alone.
Why we don't cover every large round
A large round without much additional signal tells readers relatively little beyond investor enthusiasm for the sector broadly, and we'd rather cover a smaller, more informative round than a larger one with less substance behind it.
Why we think this tradeoff is right
We think readers are better served by funding coverage that explains something about the underlying business, not just the size of the check, even if that means covering fewer rounds overall.
