The Executive Perspective Piece That Took Four Drafts to Get Honest

The published version of one of our stronger executive pieces looked nothing like the first draft. Here's what changed between them and why.

The Executive Perspective Piece That Took Four Drafts to Get Honest

One of the executive perspective pieces we're proudest of having published went through four substantial drafts before reaching its final form, and the gap between the first and fourth versions is instructive about what it actually takes to get genuine candor from a senior executive willing to try.

What the first draft looked like

The initial draft was competent, well-written, and almost entirely safe - general reflections on AI strategy with no specific failure, no named mistake, and no concrete evidence beyond confident assertion that the strategy described had actually worked.

What changed through revision

Each subsequent draft, prompted by specific editorial questions asking for a concrete example behind a general claim, replaced another piece of safe generality with a specific, checkable detail - a particular deployment that initially failed, a specific assumption that turned out wrong, a real number rather than a vague characterization of success.

Why this required real trust between editor and contributor

Pushing an executive through several rounds of "can you be more specific here" requires a working relationship where the contributor trusts that the resulting candor will be handled responsibly, not weaponized against them editorially. Building that trust took real, deliberate effort beyond the drafting process itself.

Why this process is worth the extra rounds

The published piece's value came almost entirely from the specific details that only emerged in later drafts - details a single-round editing process would likely never have surfaced. We think this multi-round process, while more resource-intensive, is what actually separates a genuinely valuable executive perspective piece from a polished but forgettable one.
