Published by the Federal Reserve Board in April 2026 and authored by Jeffrey S. Allen, this FEDS Notes report combines three federal survey sources, the Census Bureau's Business Trends and Outlook Survey, the Real-Time Population Survey, and the Atlanta Fed's Survey of Business Uncertainty, to track U.S. AI adoption. It finds roughly 18 percent of firms had formally adopted AI by year-end 2025, while approximately 78 percent of the labor force works at firms using AI in some form.
Because it draws on multiple independent federal survey instruments rather than a single source, the report offers an unusually well-triangulated picture of actual U.S. AI adoption rates.
