Peter Thiel accused Barack Obama and Pope Leo XIV of exploiting public fear of AI, Fortune reported on October 15, in closed-door lectures in Nashville on September 28 and October 5 that Politico's Decoded obtained. He said "many people know that AI is politically unpopular and want to leverage that to boost their own popularity," and framed regulation as centralizing control.
Fortune notes critics see his stance as self-interested as a co-founder of PayPal and Palantir, and that his position contrasts with Anthropic's Dario Amodei, who called for slowing frontier AI, a plan Altman and Musk backed. Thiel's representatives did not respond to Politico. These are his views, which we do not endorse.
