Euronews reports that regulations on AI companion chatbots took effect in July, aiming to curb emotional dependency and ban creating digital clones of people without consent. President Xi Jinping said AI should be "always under human control," and Premier Li Qiang warned the world risks "losing control" of frontier technologies if governments regulate too slowly.
Analysts at the Oxford China Policy Lab told Euronews a general pause in AI development is outside mainstream Chinese policy, and the state controls AI-generated content much as it does other online information.
