Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $11.9 billion, with up to $1 billion set aside in employee retention awards, in one of the largest AI acquisitions announced this year. Nvidia has committed to keeping Hugging Face's platform open, a condition widely seen as necessary to preserve the trust of the open-source machine learning community that made the platform the default hub for sharing models and datasets.
The deal strengthens Nvidia's position well beyond chips, giving it a direct foothold in the software layer where developers actually discover, fine-tune, and deploy models. It also raises an obvious tension to watch: whether a platform built on open access can stay neutral once it's owned by the company that sells the hardware most of those models eventually run on.
