TechCrunch reported on September 14 that President Trump phoned Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang while Huang was onstage at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles, and Huang put him on speaker. After Trump said opponents of an AI slowdown included political figures and China, Huang replied, “You’re right. We’re not going to let that happen, sir.”
The exchange came two days after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed that AI companies slow the pace of advancing their most powerful models, a plan Sam Altman and Elon Musk publicly backed. Trump called the push to slow AI “a hoax” and said Amodei’s letter “won’t stop our progress.” Fortune reported on September 15 that experts considered Trump and Xi Jinping unlikely to agree to an AI slowdown at a meeting the following week.
TechCrunch’s article does not give Huang’s own reasoning for his reply. For Nvidia the stakes are plain: its growth depends on continued scaling, and Huang told a Goldman Sachs conference days earlier that he expects Nvidia could grow 70% next year.
