Firefly Technology raised a $20 million Series A, SiliconANGLE's Mike Wheatley reported on October 20. Definition Capital, which previously backed Ramp and Cognition, led the round. BoxGroup, making its third investment in Firefly, and Susa Ventures, which led the seed round earlier this year, also took part.
What Firefly does
The company aims to bring AI into the physical world, beginning with workplace safety. Its Ember Safety Management platform connects to existing cameras, radios and sensors to interpret a situation, detect incidents, add context and organize a response. Its specialized hardware includes wearable panic buttons, AI beacons that triangulate panic-button alerts and detect gunshots, and a network gateway that keeps these systems connected.
Customers and plans
Front Range Community College, Colorado's largest community college, uses the platform across three campuses. Firefly plans to expand into educational centers, hospitals, enterprise campuses and other venues.
What people said
Co-founder and CEO James Batt Buckley said: “The more important the job, the more complicated the tools seem to become.” Teddy Citrin of Definition Capital said: “Firefly is building the central nervous system for physical safety.” Constellation Research analyst Holger Mueller said: “Ultimately, AI is going to have a dramatic impact on the physical world too.”
What is claimed
Firefly believes AI can close the gap between cameras, radios and sensors that currently operate in isolation, and says its platform provides unified intelligence that helps safety teams understand emergencies quickly. These are company claims and are not independently verified.
