Figure AI founder Brett Adcock has drawn a clear line between his company's approach and competitors like 1X Technologies: Figure, he says, will not launch a product in the home or workforce at scale using teleoperation, where a human remotely controls the robot, and will only ship once confident the underlying AI can operate autonomously.
That's a meaningfully higher bar than some competitors have set, and a slower path to market by definition, since teleoperation lets a company ship a product before the autonomous intelligence is fully solved. Adcock's bet is that autonomy-first is the more defensible long-term position even if it means later shipping dates, a tradeoff that will be easier to evaluate once Figure's actual commercial deployments are large enough to compare directly against teleoperated competitors.
