Analysis: Anthropic and OpenAI on One Page

AIBW analysis: quarterly revenue, annualized run rate and valuation measure different things.

Analysis: Anthropic and OpenAI on One Page

Anthropic reportedly had quarterly revenue of $4.8 billion in Q1, $11.6 billion in Q2 and $16.8 billion in Q3 per the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times, with an expected IPO valuation of up to $2 trillion. OpenAI told investors annualized revenue is approaching $50 billion, per the FT, after raising $122 billion in March, with an IPO pushed to early 2027.

A $50 billion annualized figure implies about $12.5 billion a quarter, our simple arithmetic and not a reported number; it is not comparable to Anthropic's reported Q3 without matching definitions, since Anthropic counts cloud-partner sales and OpenAI does not. The two companies' growth rates, 77% run-rate growth in Q3 for OpenAI against about 45% sequential for Anthropic, are likewise not like for like.
