Retail analyst Neil Saunders told Fortune that if Kroger's AI investment were spread across products, it would take "only cents" off an average basket, and that he expects savings to focus on value-sensitive categories. He said Kroger's corporate structure was bloated, so some cuts would have happened without AI.
He added that it "will take some time" to see whether expected gains in faster decisions and better sourcing and forecasting materialize. Kroger did not immediately respond to Fortune's request for comment.
