Hachette’s David Shelley Says AI Shortcuts Are Creating a ‘Worse C-Suite’

Hachette Book Group CEO David Shelley told Fortune that leaders who rely heavily on AI face a communication crisis. "I predict a growing dissonance between how someone appears in their written statements and how they are in real life," he said, adding that relying on AI and others to communicate "dulls the brain."

Shelley said "we're all being trained to just want shortcuts," and that losing intellectual curiosity and empathy would produce a "worse C-suite." Fortune notes a survey in which 68% of U.S. and U.K. leaders use AI to summarize documents and 58% to draft emails. The article does not describe any Hachette AI policy.
