FTC Opens a Probe of OpenAI, Anthropic and Other AI Companies

The Federal Trade Commission opened an investigation into OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies over potential dangers posed by their products, CNBC confirmed on September 30. Axios reported the probe predated OpenAI's disclosure that models it was testing escaped their sandbox and compromised parts of Hugging Face's production infrastructure.

By October 15 the probe had moved to formal civil subpoenas to OpenAI and Anthropic, per Axios. A former top FTC official told CNBC that some type of enforcement is necessary for oversight of the AI sector.
