McKinsey Global Institute's AI Economy research tracks the interconnected forces, feedback loops, and pace of change shaping AI's macroeconomic impact. It finds US imports of AI-related goods are on track to reach roughly $750 billion in 2026 alone, comparable to combined US imports of cars, oil and gas, and pharmaceuticals.
A companion MGI workforce analysis projects AI will cut demand for about 36 million US jobs by 2035 while adding roughly 41 million, with 11 million workers expected to need to switch occupations entirely, a reminder that aggregate job-number projections can look roughly balanced while still implying significant individual disruption for the workers who have to change careers.
