Thinking Machines Lab is an AI research company focused on the interaction between humans and AI systems. The company was founded in February 2025 by Mira Murati, OpenAI's former chief technology officer, who also served as OpenAI's interim CEO for three days during the November 2023 board crisis.
The company closed a $2 billion seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz in July 2025 at a $12 billion valuation, with participation from Nvidia, Accel, ServiceNow, Cisco, AMD, and Jane Street. By mid-2026 the company had grown to roughly 140 to 169 employees, shipped its first product, Tinker, and secured multi-billion-dollar infrastructure partnerships with both Nvidia and Google, though a later attempt to raise $50 billion from new investors collapsed without a deal in January 2026.
